1960s

J B G:

Johnny B. Goode is a rock-and-roll song written in 1958 and recorded for the first time by Chuck Berry. The song was a serious hit, peaking at variety 2 on the Hot R&B Sides chart of the signboard magazine and number eight on its Top one hundred charts. It is considered one of the most popular songs in music history. It has been released by several different artists and has received several awards and accolades. The track is also ranked seventh on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Written by Berry in 1955, the song is about an illiterate New Orleans "country boy."

,who plays the guitar "just like a-ringing a bell" and who might sooner or later "be in lights." Berry admitted that the track was partially autobiographical and that the first lyrics introduced Johnny as a "coloured boy" but he modified it to a "country boy" so that it could be played on the radio. The beginning guitar riff is in fact a note-for-note copy of Joe Louis Jordan's opening single-note solo in "ain't that just like a woman"

Rock N Roll:

Black rock' n' roll was just rhythm and blues with a brand new white audience and white rock' n' roll was a combination of blues and western. The guitar licks and vocal lines are bluesy in Johnny B Goode, but they still bear a lightweight country tinge in addition. The song structures were drawn largely from the 12-bar blues-but this was true of the many earlier country songs too. The syncopated energy makes these recordings typical of rock n'roll, and it is difficult to determine exactly which components belong to blues and which belong to country. The mix displays proof that the two have been interacting for several years.

Either the piano or sax was usually the main instrument in the early rock and roll creations, but these were generally substituted or augmented by stringed instruments in the mid to late 50s. The beat is a dance rhythm with an accentuated beat provided by a continuously playing drum. Classic rock and roll typically feature one or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm), a bass fiddle or string bass or, after the mid-1950s, an electric bass, and a drum kit.

Rock' n' roll eventually later became mainstream and lost its defiant quality, and a pop emerged that had stylistic similarities to rock' n' roll but was produced and sold more as it progressed. Some say rock 'n' roll became 'weak' but the spirit flourished within the rhythm & blues development and ever-expanding influence.

My Generation:

The song is about teen rebellion and features spontaneous, energetic sound fuelled by Townshend’s riffs, Keith Moon's explosive percussion and John Entwistle’s nimble bass work. It opens with a series of power chords and builds up in intensity with a hail of feedback.

Another salient side of "My Generation" is Daltrey's delivery: an angry and annoyed stutter. varied stories exist on the explanation for this distinct delivery. One is that the song began as a slow talking blues variety while not the stutter (in the Nineteen Seventies it absolutely was generally performed per se, however with the stutter, as "My Generation Blues"), however once being galvanized by John Lee Hooker's "Stuttering Blues," Townshend reworked the song into its gift type. another excuse is that it absolutely was recommended to Daltrey that he stutter to sound sort of a British mod on speed. it's also planned, albeit less often, that the stutter was introduced to grant the A framework for implying an expletive within the lyrics: "Why don't you all fff ... fade away!" but, producer Shel Talmy insisted it absolutely was merely "one of these happy accidents" that he thought they ought to keep.

Roger Daltrey has conjointly commented that he had not rehearsed the song before the recording, was nervous, and he was unable to listen to his own voice through the monitors. The stutter happened as he tried to suit the lyrics to the music as best he may, and the band determined it worked well. The BBC at first refused to play "My Generation" as a result of it failed to need to offend those who stutter; however, it reversed its call once the song became more widespread.

The instrumentation of the song match and reflect the lyrics :quick and aggressive. considerably, "My Generation" additionally featured one of the first bass solos in rock history.

New genres that emerged enclosed rock 'n' roll, that extended the creative elements; glam rock, that highlighted acquisition and visual style; and, the numerous and enduring sub-genre of serious metal, that stressed volume, power, and speed. Within the half of the Nineteen Seventies, rock and roll reacted by manufacturing stripped, energetic social and political critiques. Punk was associate influence within the Eighties on new wave, post-punk and eventually different rock. From the Nineties different rock began to dominate rock'n'roll and entered the thought within the sort of filth, Brit pop, and indie rock. Roxanne; the song is an anachronism, because compared with the artist's usual material it's slow, quiet and melodic.

Reggae rock is a sub-genre of reggae fusion and rock music that primarily uses the genres reggae, Rock and Ska.

Reggae- an expressive style that originated in Jamaica within the late 1960's. Reggae typically relates news, social gossip, and political comment. It unfolded into a commercialised jazz field, being referred to as "Ska" and is instantly identifiable from the counterpoint between the bass and drumbeat, and the offbeat percussion section. Naturally, reggae rock incorporates these components.

New Wave:

New wave is a genre encompassing various rock or pop-oriented music styles standard within the late Seventies and the Eighties with relations to mid-1970s punk rock. New wave moved far from traditional blues and rock and roll sounds to form pop and rock that incorporated disco and electronic music. Initially, new wave was just like rock and roll, however it became its own distinct genre. It subsequently helped create other sub-genres and fusions, as well as synth-pop.

Although it incorporates a lot of the original rock and roll sound and spirit, new wave is more complex in both lyrics and music. Common characteristics of recent wave music embrace the utilisation of synthesizers and electronic instrumentation, and a unique visual style which appeared in music videos and fashion.

lFunk – Research

Soul music came from gospel. The difference being the change in lyrics from god and religion to sex and love. Many of the most popular of artists of this time were Motown artists, such as Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder. Then came Funk, a branch off from soul, born in the 1960s through African American musicians incorporating rhythm and blues, soul and jazz to create a new powerful form of Black expression.

James Brown who is, by many, considered to be the “Father of Funk”, developed a signature emphasis on the first beat and combined his personality with different aspects of these genres to create quite the onstage presence that soon started to stir in mainstream America. Young adults became intrigued by the energy and excitement from the genre and were gaining popularity from its overall uniqueness.

This form of creative communication also challenged the complicated structure of power between culturally different groups and accompanied many protest movements during and after the Civil Rights Movement. Funk musicians took control of social norms through their use of language; reclaiming words used against them as hateful remarks and in-turn dulling the cruel meaning behind them. E.g. “I’m black and I’m proud”

In funk, there is a syncopated groove, meaning that the off beats are stressed randomly, to keep the song interesting and ensure listeners stay on their toes throughout. Another key musical feature being Dominant 7th/9th chords which gives a ‘bluesy’ feel. Although being like soul, it has a much harsher sound and hardly used orchestral backings. Instrumental changes occurred where the focus shifted towards the bass, drums and guitar becoming more important in the music too.

The vulnerability was developed into the style by funk artists. The vocal expressionism and emphasis on raw passion have influenced many different genres and styles of music including disco, which stressed the live performance just in a much different way. Disc Jockeys would begin mixing records with the same beats per minute so that they could be mixed by DJ's to create a seamless environment.

Hip-hop artists also sampled drumbeats from funk songs and put into their tracks to revive the genre and introduce it back into the younger generation in a newer style and presentation. (e.g. James Brown’s “funky drummer" was sampled by Dizzy Rascal, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Snoop Dog and many other artists over the years)

Tainted Love:

Tainted Love is a song written by Ed Cobb, formerly from the American group Four Preps, which was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. It became world famous after being covered and reworked by the English Synth-Pop duo Soft Cell in 1981 and has since been covered by various groups and artists.

The Soft Cell recording featured a slower tempo than in the version by Jones and changed the key of the song to match the lower voice of Marc Almond and was in the key of G rather than the initial C. Synthesizers and rhythm machines replaced the original's guitars, bass, drums and horns. It was not until soft cell's electro-synth version, that the song became widely recognised, and has become the definitive version; a true successor to the original.

Synth-pop:

Synth-pop (short for synthesiser pop and sometimes called techno-pop) is a sub-genre of new wave music which first became popular in the late 1970s and features the synthesiser as the primary instrument.

The utilisation of synthesisers, drum machines and sequencers characterised synth-pop, often using them to replace all other instruments. The genre is varied but defined by a wide range of values that avoided rock playing styles, rhythms and structures that were instead replaced by synthetic textures which were robot-like, frequently identified by the new technology’s limitations, including monophonic synths. (only can play one note at a time).

Most synth-pop musicians had minimal musical abilities, dependent on the engineering for creating or reproducing the songs. The outcome was often simplistic, with grooves often put together from simple repetitive riffs, often without any complexities or much harmonic progression. Early synth-pop was portrayed as cold, due to the use of droning electronics that had close to no change in inflection. Typical lyrical themes of synth-pop songs were loneliness and feeling emotionally distant to the outside world.

The introduction of dance beats and more conventional rock instrumentation in its second phase in the 1980s made the music warmer, catchier and more contained within the three-minute pop conventions. Synthesizers were increasingly used to mimic the traditional orchestras and horns sounds. In our cover of this piece, we increased the tempo to further try to recreate that recognisable disco/dance groove.

Thin, treble-dominant, synthesised melodies and simplistic drum programs gave way to dense, compact production and a more typical drum sound. The lyrics were usually more positive, engaging with more traditional themes of pop music such as love, escapism and hope. Since synthesisers excluded the need for large groups of musicians, these singers were often members of a duet in which their partner would play all the instrumentation. The genre has been severely criticised for it's alleged lack of musicianship and emotion and so personally, i attempted to show some connection to the lyrics and music in the performance.

Just:

Just is a single by the British alternative rock band Radiohead, released in 1995. Radiohead singer Thom Yorke wrote a song about his narcissistic friend, which is shown in the lyrics. He also notes that seeing who could incorporate the most chords into a song was something of a contest between him and Jonny Greenwood. The chorus section includes a clear use of the octatonic scale on an ever-ascending path that harmonises with a series of four-chords.

Alternative:

Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a rock music genre that originated from the 1970s ' experimental underground music and became popular in the 1980s. The term "alternative" refers to the contrast between the genre and mainstream rock music.

Alternative rock has been largely defined throughout much of its history as resisting the commercialism of mainstream culture, although this could be questioned since some of the major alternative bands have gained mainstream success or co-opted with the major labels since the 1990s. Other bands played in small clubs during the 1980s, recorded for indie labels, and spread their popularity through friends of friends.

Indie:

Indie rock is a rock music style that emerged in the 1970s in the United States and UK. Initially used to describe independent record labels, the word was synonymous with the music they made and was frequently interchanged with alternative rock.

The indie ("independent") rock describes the small and relatively low-budget labels on which it is released and the bands and artists involved' do-it-yourself approach. Although distribution contracts are often negotiated with major corporate companies, these labels and the artists they host have tried to maintain their independence, leaving them free to pursue sounds, feelings and subjects with limited appeal to broad, mainstream audiences.

Trip Switch:

Trip Switch is a track by Nothing But Thieves, a British alternative rock band. It was written by Julian Emery and released on 18 June 2015 as a single from the band's self-titled album. It was the top of the 2016 Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

Psychedelic Rock:

Psychedelic rock is a complex genre of rock music that is inspired, influenced, or reflective of psychedelic culture, based on hallucinogenic drugs that change perception. The aim of the music is to recreate and intensify the mind-altering effects of psychedelic drugs, especially LSD. Most experimental bands vary in style, and often falsely the label is added.

Originating between British and American musicians in the mid-1960s, the sound of psychedelic rock invokes three core LSD effects: depersonalization, dechronization, and dynamization; all of which detach the user from reality. To reflect this, he lyrics I wrote are about escaping reality and mental transportation to try and get away from the consequence and responsibility of the real world.

Metal:

Heavy metal (or metal) is a style of rock music that formed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, primarily in the United Kingdom. With origins in blues rock, psychedelic rock, and acid rock, the bands making heavy metal created a powerful, noisy sound characterised by heavily enhanced distortion, lengthy guitar solos, emphatic rhythms, and general loudness. Violence and egotism are often associated with the lyrics and production styles of the music. and so naturally, when we were discussing lyric themes, what we ended up expanding was in the themes of war and "bloody vengeance".

The usual band lineup includes a drummer, a bass player, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer who might or might not be an instrumentalist. Historically the key element of heavy metal has been the electric guitar and the acoustic energy it produces by amplification. The heavy metal guitar sound results from a concerted use of high volumes and heavy distortion. The prominent role of the bass is also crucial to the metal sound, and the interplay between bass and guitar is a central element. The bass guitar provides the sound of low frequency crucial to "heavy" the music.
